Middle Wisconsin General Assembly Meeting   Leave a comment

Middle Wisconsin General Assembly Meeting
Wednesday, Nov 16, 7 pm – 9 pm
UWMC — Arhnsbrock Room, Rm 182 (use Garfield St entrance)
Wausau, WI

Thank you if you made it to our first General Assembly. There was a lot of energy, skills, and potential. I am really excited about the differences we can make together to achieve our objectives:

1. Education on Progressive political issues, candidates, and events relevant to our local and state community
2. Coordinate with other organizations, including the Walker/Galloway recall and training
3. Provide an outlet for community discussion and action

Invited to attend this event are other organizers from around the state to discuss messaging around the recall. Please come prepared to contribute an answer to the question from someone who is undecided, “Why should I sign this?”… and remember, you only have their attention for 30 seconds or less!

We have several other important initiatives to discuss including efforts and events around the recalls, outreach to the Hmong community, and hosting a “Healthcare Forum” with Citizen Action that could dovetail nicely with the recall of Galloway.

When you come, we will ask you to sign in with contact information, donate $1 to the kitty (to pay for the use of the room-this can certainly be waived if it is a problem), and be prepared to introduce yourself to the group.

Finally, the purpose for this restructuring is to reach out to more people. We are only as strong as the energy, initiative, and skills of our people. If you are interested in learning more about us or would like an outlet for action, please come. I look forward to seeing you there, please contact Mandy Wright at mandy@middlewisconsin.org if you have any questions.

Recalls begin at 12.01 am tonight. GO.   Leave a comment

post by nathan k

So, we’re legally eligible to begin signing recall petitions at 12.01 am on Tuesday, November 15, and there are parties and get-togethers all over Wisconsin that aim to do just that. One such event is at the Wausau Recall Office located at 4404 Stewart Ave. If you can’t make it to that one, you can stop by that office during the day, or you can go to the Labor Temple located on the corner of Clark and N 3rd Ave. Remember that we are not only recalling Walker and Kleefisch, but also State Senator (*cough*) Pam Galloway. There will also be many other Recall events coming up, so stay tuned…
Scotty-boy and his buddies think this is all due to those crazy libs in ‘Madison’…let’s show ’em that this is OUR Wisconsin and we’re taking it back !!!

Recall Q+A   Leave a comment

post by nathan k

Some good Q+A from the latest CWUC newletter. Some items are worded for teachers, but could be applied to your situation if considered more generally.

—————————————————————————————————————

What is the timing for the petitions and election?
Petition drive commences November 15, 2011. Signatures must be delivered to GAB by Friday January 13, 2012. We expect the recall election to be scheduled in the spring of 2012.

Who is in charge of the petition gathering drive?
A nonpartisan political action committee called United Wisconsin is coordinating the petition gathering process. WEAC supports United Wisconsin’s efforts as well as the recall efforts of We Are Wisconsin.

How do I (and other members) get a petition?
Recall petitions can be downloaded from the United Wisconsin website (www.unitedwisconsin.com) on or after November 15. You can also request recall petitions from the CWUC office.

What do I need to do as a circulator?
The signatures must be personally gathered. Petitions may not be left somewhere unattended for interested people to sign.
When circulating petitions watch for the following:
1. Names are printed clearly and are easy to read.
2. All information is complete.
3. No P.O. Boxes. Only a physical address.
4. The printed name and signature are the same.
The circulator must sign and certify each petition page after all the signatures on the petition are gathered. Please turn in petitions to the CWUC office as you go. The office will send in the petitions. All petitions must be in the CWUC office no later than January 6, 2012.

Can we circulate petitions while on work time?
No. Circulation activities must be on your own time, as a volunteer effort.

Can we collect signatures on school property?
No. If you want to collect signatures at a union meeting, even from members, the best practice is to hold the meeting on nonschool property. You can do all other recall activities at union meetings on school property, such as discussing the recall, distributing recall petitions, training members to circulate the petitions, etc.

Can we collect signatures at or around school events if on public property?
Yes, as long as you are on public property—such as on the sidewalk, at a public park, etc.

What should I do if someone objects and asks me to leave?
Stay polite and professional. If asked to leave, do so. Call the CWUC office to report problems or concerns.

Can I (and other members) work on recall efforts with other unions and other independent groups?
Yes.

Can we engage in recall-related activities on work time?
No. Members may not engage in these activities on work time.

Can I wear political items such as a “Recall Walker” button while working?
It is best not to do so. It is important to respect all viewpoints while on the job.

Enemies of Democracy Prepare to Destroy Recall Petitions   Leave a comment

post by nathan k

Beware.

Conservative Extremists will be attempting to collect recall signatures in order to destroy them. They may even be posing with the correct identification…but they intend to undermine the recall effort by collecting as many signatures as possible and then disposing of them. While this is explicitly against the law, it’s unfortunately not surprising. Those who fear the will of the people will stop at nothing to hold on to power.

Do them one better — if you can, go to your nearest recall headquarters and sign the petition there. You can be sure that it will be handled and counted appropriately.

The results are in…and the Democratic challengers in the recall elections have won round one – the GOP-forced Primaries – handily, wiping out the Zombie Spoilers (I refuse to call them ‘fake Dems’). The excellent Blue Cheddar offers a more detailed look.

Read and learn what you can…because pretty soon we’ll be up to bat here in Northcentral WI !
